Private rooftop views, craft cocktails with light Mediterranean bites, and a relaxed, quieter lounge vibe.

La Terraza de Solecio sits atop the boutique Palacio Solecio on Calle Granada, one of the quieter Palacio Solecio rooftop bar experiences you'll find in Málaga's old town.

I went expecting another polished hotel terrace. What I got was a rooftop that felt closer to drinking at a friend's private courtyard than a tourist-facing bar.

The trade-off is the views. You won't get sweeping panoramas here. But if you value conversation, craft cocktails, and shaded seating over Instagram backdrops, it's worth the visit.

Below I cover the vibe, prices, how to get in, and whether it's worth booking ahead. If you're comparing options, check the full best rooftop bars in Malaga guide.

  • Couples seeking a refined, romantic rooftop experience in Málaga's old town
  • Hotel guests of Palacio Solecio looking for a relaxed evening without leaving the property
  • Travelers and locals who enjoy quality cocktails, attentive service, and a calm, grown-up vibe
  • Design lovers drawn to Andalusian architecture and sophisticated details
  • Those marking special moments - birthdays, anniversaries, or a stylish night out

Not Ideal For

  • Party-seekers wanting DJs, dancing, or a buzzing late-night crowd
  • Large groups looking for casual, high-energy rooftop scenes
  • Budget-conscious visitors - prices match the upscale setting

Is La Terraza de Solecio Open to the Public?

Yes. La Terraza de Solecio is open to the public, not just hotel guests. The bar welcomes visitors from late afternoon onwards, while hotel guests have access from morning.

You don't need a reservation to walk in, though I'd recommend booking for weekend evenings during summer. The terrace seats around 40 people, and it fills up faster than you'd expect for a place this tucked away.

The rooftop pool on the same terrace is a different story. That's reserved exclusively for hotel guests.

The Vibe

Leafy terrace bar with tiled counter at La Terraza Solecio in Malaga

More laid-back and private than most Málaga rooftops, this is a spot where conversation matters more than the backdrop. The terrace has an Andalusian feel, with tasteful decor and a relaxed elegance that reflects the boutique hotel below.

I ordered a gin and tonic and sat for two hours without a single rushed look from the staff. They're attentive and professional, treating you like a guest rather than a customer. It's one of the few Málaga rooftops that genuinely suits a romantic evening out.

During the day, the terrace catches full sun but offers shaded corners. That's rare in this city. By evening, soft lighting takes over and the space feels even more intimate. If you're after a DJ or party crowd, look elsewhere.

Opening Hours

  • Monday - Thursday: 08:00 - 22:00
  • Friday - Saturday: 08:00 - 23:00
  • Sunday: 08:00 - 22:00

The terrace opens to the public from late afternoon. Hotel guests can access it from morning.

The menu leans upscale, with prices to match the setting.

Drinks:

  • Signature cocktails: 10-14 EUR
  • Gin and tonics from 10 EUR
  • Premium wines and champagne by the glass
  • Coffee and soft drinks available from morning

Food:

  • Mediterranean sharing plates and light bites
  • Local Andalusian flavours with seasonal ingredients
  • International options alongside regional dishes

I'll be honest: it's pricey. Two cocktails and a sharing plate ran me close to 45 EUR. But the quality is there, and the staff take genuine care with every order. Worth it for a birthday or anniversary, less so for casual afternoon drinks.

The View & Seating

Cathedral tower and tiled roofs seen from the rooftop at La Terraza Solecio

Don't come here expecting the wide-open panoramas of AC Hotel Malaga Palacio. The views at Solecio are more enclosed, wrapping you in Malaga's terracotta rooftops with glimpses of the cathedral tower between buildings.

What you can see:

  • Terracotta rooftops and church towers
  • The cathedral from certain angles
  • A close-up, courtyard-like perspective rather than a skyline

Seating options:

  • High tables for drinks along the railing
  • Comfortable loungers for slow afternoons
  • Shaded seating areas with parasols and greenery
  • Intimate corners tucked behind planters

If you're visiting in July or August, the shaded spots matter more than you'd think. This is one of the few Malaga rooftops where you won't bake in direct sun all afternoon.

How to Make a Reservation

Reservations aren't required but they help, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings between June and September. I walked in on a Wednesday without any issue, but weekend sunset slots fill up fast.

How to book:

If you're visiting midweek or arriving before 7pm, you'll likely get a table without booking.

Sunrise at Gibralfaro Castle

Watch the sun rise over Malaga from the highest point in the city. The views stretch from the bullring to the port and beyond.

The castle opens at 9am, but staying at the Parador gives you access to the terrace at dawn - before anyone else arrives.

Where to Stay

Parador de Malaga Gibralfaro - The only hotel with direct castle access. Wake up and walk straight onto the terrace for sunrise.

What works:

  • Smart casual throughout the day
  • Linen shirts, sundresses, clean trainers
  • More polished looks for evening visits

What doesn't work:

  • Beachwear or swimwear
  • Overly casual sportswear
  • Flip-flops in the evening

Think boutique hotel rather than beach bar. Nobody will turn you away for wearing shorts during the day, but you'd feel out of place in a football shirt at 9pm.

Access & Getting There

How to find it: Enter through the main entrance of Palacio Solecio, located on Calle Granada in Malaga's historic centre. From the lobby, take the elevator to the rooftop level.

Location: Calle Granada is one of the main pedestrian streets in the old town, lined with shops and restaurants. The hotel is easy to spot.

Public transport: The historic centre is well connected by bus. The nearest stops are on Alameda Principal, about a 5-minute walk. Málaga Centro-Alameda train station is also nearby.

Parking: Street parking in the old town is extremely limited. Use the underground car parks at Plaza de la Marina or Calle Alcazabilla.

Age restrictions: Guests of all ages are welcome.

Our Verdict

Rooftop pool terrace with parasols and cathedral view at La Terraza Solecio

Would I go back? For a special evening, yes. La Terraza de Solecio isn't an everyday hangout, but it delivers when you want something quieter and more refined than the bigger Malaga rooftops. The shaded seating is a genuine advantage on hot summer days.

Best for: Couples seeking a romantic, quiet setting, anyone who values good conversation over crowds, those looking for shaded rooftop seating.

Skip if: You want sweeping panoramic views or a lively, social atmosphere.

If you're planning to stay at Palacio Solecio, you're just an elevator ride from one of the city's most intimate rooftop terraces. Guests also get access to the rooftop plunge pool on the same terrace.
