I drove up expecting another hotel rooftop. What I found was a 30-year-old hillside restaurant with northern Spanish cooking and a view that beats most actual rooftops.

The food leans Asturian, with much of the produce trucked down from the green north, which is not what you expect on a Costa del Sol hillside.

The Vibe

Drive up to El Higuerón and you're in different territory from urban rooftops.

A hillside restaurant with a wraparound terrace greets you, not a building-top bar squeezed between hotel air-conditioning units. The space is built around the view, with tables angled toward the coast.

The terrace runs the show at sunset, when the Mediterranean and the coastline catch that golden light. I came late afternoon and watched it drop behind the hills with a glass of Asturian cider in hand.

One caveat: it gets warm and exposed at midday in summer, so the interior dining room and its air conditioning earn their keep. Book the terrace for the evening, not lunch, if you want the light without the heat. The new 36-5º Rooftop Bar in town is the cooler-after-dark alternative if you'd rather drinks than dinner.

Menu & Prices

The kitchen here leans north. Much of the produce comes from Asturias, the green corner of Spain, so the menu runs heavier and more rustic than typical Costa del Sol fare.

That means dishes like fabada, the Asturian white-bean and pork stew, charcoal-grilled meats, a serious rib eye, and fresh seafood. Save room for the Chocolate Bar dessert.

Walk-ins: Usually fine given the large capacity, but the seaward terrace tables at sunset fill fast on weekends. Book ahead if that's the seat you want.
